Three Australian bars named among the best in the world

Three Australian bars named among the best in the world

Three Australian bars have made it into the World’s 50 Best Bars list, with one in Melbourne topping the list in Australia and two in Sydney rounding out the list.

Ranked 21st, 23rd and 35th on 50Best’s list of the World’s Best Bars, these three spots are sure bets for a great night out and too many cocktails.

Caretaker’s Cottage

50 Best described this Melbourne bar, set in an old cottage surrounded by skyscrapers, as a “must visit for locals and travelers alike” when it opens in 2022.

“Owners Rob Liebeckans, Ryan Noreikes and Matt Stirling—all of whom have worked in some of the best bars in the world—are a rarity in that they all actually work in a bar,” said 50 Best.

“They don’t shout to the world about the pedigree of Caretaker’s Cottage, preferring to call it a simple local pub, and in atmosphere and design it is very much like a neighborhood bar.”

Caretaker’s Cottage said on the bar’s social media page that they were “still giddy with the news.”

“Thank you to everyone who voted and everyone who supports us day in and day out, as well as our amazing staff.

“We love you, without you nothing would happen.”

The owners said “we’re just three best friends who decided it would be a good idea to open a bar.”

“We never imagined we would reach such heights,” they said.

“Nothing will change. Maybe some more champagne in the next few days.”

Maybe Sammy

Although Sydney’s only entry on the list missed Australia’s top spot, cocktail bar Maybe Sammy, located in The Rocks, Sydney, still boasts its sixth consecutive entry on the list since opening in 2019.

“We are very proud to represent Australia, home to one of the best hospitality industries in the world,” Maybe Sammy wrote on Instagram.

“To our amazing team, your hard work and passion have allowed us to be ranked 26th in the world and one of the top 50 bars 6 years in a row.”

50 Best said the bar has remained “the city’s most talked-about bar since it opened in early 2019, lighting up a dull stretch of street.”

“Patrons come for the cleverly executed combination of theatrical art and attentive, fun service that is designed to add a spark to the evening,” said 50 Best.

“And of course, the bartenders in those signature pastel pink jackets deliver delicious drinks with every pour.”

Birdie

The final entrant to Australia’s list, ranked 35th, is Birdie from Melbourne.

According to 50 Best, it “may very well be the most Australian bar in existence”, and its local selection of ingredients and seasonal drink list propelled it onto the list.

“Things can be quite technical—harvesting, fermentation and vacuum distillation—but the drinks are conceptual creations,” 50 Best said.

“When it comes to service, there is a chatty, casual, casual sensibility that, despite all the hard work, experience and knowledge, is determined to please guests.”

The best bars in the world

The top three bars in the world, according to the list, are located in three cities around the world: Mexico City, Hong Kong and Barcelona.

Mexico City’s Handshake Speakeasy ranked No. 1 on the list, with the Top 50 calling it an intimate Prohibition-era-inspired space that exudes The Great Gatsby energy.

“For the basement bar, a spot opening in 2023, you’ll find pure Mexican spirit and energy.”

“At the center of the bar is the lab, led by lab manager Yiya Aparicio, where the team experiments daily.”

Bar Leone in Hong Kong came in second place, offering Italian cocktails with “simple but intriguing twists.”

“The team is renowned for their warm hospitality and passion for providing first-class service.”

“Their dedication to excellent food and drink ensures that guests not only enjoy a taste of Italy, but also feel like they’ve made a new friend in the process.”

Rounding out the top three is Bar Sips in Barcelona, which was named the best bar in the world in 2023.

“Sips’ island bar design, which intentionally eschews expectations of what a bar should look like, remains as attractive as ever,” said 50 Best.

“024 marked the launch of the stunning Esencia, a connected but separate space within Sips that immediately caught the attention of every cocktail lover on the planet.”
