Percy Allan, the longtime head of the NSW Treasury, a senior corporate figure and economic and public policy gadfly, died on Tuesday night after a two-year battle with lymphoma. He was 78.

Allan worked under some of the most distinguished political figures in New South Wales’ post-war political history, including long-serving Labor Prime Ministers Neville Wran and Bob Carr. He reached the zenith of his influence under the reforming NSW Liberal premier Nick Greiner.
