Michael Maguire press conference; Brisbane Broncos players return to training amid culture concerns

Broncos players will receive no praise from Michael Maguire for an early return to training as the manager plans to usher in a new era at the club.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday to discuss the off-field incident with Ezra Mam last week, Maguire was forced to answer a wide range of questions about how things stood.

Brisbane, which was on the brink of a premiership just over 12 months ago, is a club in shambles and concerns are growing about the culture within the playing group.

But in a stoic response, Maguire says he is confident he can turn things around.

“I know where I’m starting and we need to start building from where we are right now,” Maguire told reporters.

“It’s a great opportunity and I’m really excited to be here. I’ve spoken to a lot of players and I’m very enthusiastic about what’s to come. I need to look at everything around the club and develop it.” something I’m starting to see right now.

“There’s a lot of positivity in this place, but we need to deal with what’s in front of us. Until I actually go in there and start talking to the players… I’ll start to form my own opinion about what we need to do.” move forward.

“We’re going to adapt to what we need to achieve, but we have a great opportunity: the Broncos are a big brand and represent a lot of great people here in Brisbane.”

“I feel the magnitude of what this club represents and we want to make sure we represent all these people properly.”

Maguire is expected to crack the whip once official pre-season training begins in November, but some members of the Broncos squad are already training at Red Hill in preparation for the arrival of the Premier League winner.

Asked if he was impressed by the work ethic shown when it wasn’t required, Maguire gave a blunt response that will send a stern message to the group.

“I’m obviously aware of it, but it should be the norm,” he said.

“We need to adapt to where we are and things like that, now that I’m here I can start looking at them. I’m looking forward to seeing the guys here in training because that’s what you do and that’s the expectation.

“By being ready from day one, you have a better chance of getting there in October (for the grand final).”
