Structures of a clear pro-European orientation in leadership positions are the only guarantee that Montenegro will continue its European path even stronger after the completion of four chapters, said Deputy Prime Minister Nick Jeloszaj.

He said this in a conversation with Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Balkans Sasha Kasanof during an official visit to Washington.

“After the closure of four chapters, some new political moments and processes are emerging with the aim of Montenegro’s even more determined continuation of its European path, the only guarantee of which is the structure of an unambiguous pro-European orientation in leadership positions,” Zeleshaj said.

Zheloshaj’s statement said he informed Kasanof about the signing of the Memorandum of Economic Cooperation between Montenegro and the United States of America (USA), Montenegro’s European future and plans for a strategic partnership with the US.

It is added that Želosaj also informed Kasanofu about the “potentially destabilizing” activities of clero-nationalist structures, which, as he stated, are aimed at undermining Montenegro’s European prospects.

“By signing the Memorandum, Montenegro proved that its only direction is the pro-Western and pro-American path, and thanks to this memorandum, Montenegro’s European and Euro-Atlantic positions will be further strengthened,” Zseljosaj said.

He stressed that the programmatic cooperation of the minority parties with Prime Minister Milojko Spajic, who enjoys their support in order to improve living standards and European integration, has so far been very effective on the road to the European Union (EU).

According to Zseljoszaj, this is best demonstrated by the four chapters that will be closed by the end of the year.

“This model of cooperation has been positively assessed by the highest European authorities, including the European Commission,” Zheleshaj noted.

The statement said Kasanof noted that Montenegro, as a credible NATO country, has the full support of the United States in continuing democratization, the rule of law and the fight against organized crime.
