Colman Domingo Helming ‘scandalous’ at Miramax; Sydney Sweeney plays Kim Novak and David Johnson plays Sammy Davis Jr.

EXCLUSIVE: Colman Domingo makes his directorial debut in ScandalousMiramax’s fast-paced drama about the secret love between movie star Kim Novak and singer, dancer, and movie star Sammy Davis Jr. in 1957. Sydney Sweeney will play Novak and David Johnson will play Davis Jr.

The plan is to film the movie—think classic Hollywood movie filmed in Los Angeles—after Domingo and Sweeney wrap up the third season of the HBO series. Euphoria.

Much like she did with the sleeper hit Anyone but youSweeney was very involved in the making of this film, and she will produce alongside Tanya Cohen and Bobby Roth, with John Levine serving as executive producer. Matthew Fantaci wrote the script.

Before he became CEO of Miramax, John Glickman founded and stayed involved with the project at Panoramic. Novak, star Dizziness and Rat Pack member Davis Jr. were at the height of their star power when they met as guests at The Steve Allen Show. They fell deeply in love, but as rumors spread, rampant racism in America threatened to derail their careers. Novak experienced the wrath of Harry Cohn, the head of Columbia Pictures, with whom the actress had a contract. Their secret affair became big news when a Chicago gossip columnist wrote a detailed account of their relationship in early 1958, including their plans to marry. And this despite their denials. Nine days later, Davis Jr. married a black chorus girl named Loray White.

Domingo completes successful turns Rustin And sing singand he’s working on a Nat King Cole movie that he’ll star in and direct. A former television executive, he currently stars in Tina Fey’s Netflix series Four Seasons and the Netflix limited series Madness. He also plays Joe Jackson in the Michael Jackson biopic. Lights Out: Nat King Cole, which Domingo co-wrote with director Patricia McGregor, will premiere at New York Theater Workshop this spring after premiering at the Geffen Theater in 2019.
