Cummins ready to ‘set things right’ at next month’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Mumbai: Ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Australia captain Pat Cummins said his team will “get better” this time after losing the last four editions of the series.

India have retained the title in the last four BGTs, including their famous series victories in 2018-19 and 2020-21, where Rishabh Pant played a remarkable knock of 89 not out at the Gabba to snatch victory in style to end Australia’s 32-year career. the undefeated flee to their fortress.

The Australian captain called the Indian wicketkeeper the X-factor in the middle order and also highlighted his unruly behavior behind the stumps.

“Rishabh had a great series here in Australia last time. He’s always a bit of a mid-level X-factor. You never know what you’re going to get, and it’s fun even when you’re up against it. And he always has something to say behind the stumps – he’s very funny, he makes me laugh,” Cummins told the Star Sports press room.

Cummins also shared his thoughts on how the Australian bowling team evaluates young Indian players like Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“I played against Shubman a little bit. I haven’t seen much of Jaiswal, only a little bit in the IPL. But they both look like young guys who have scored plenty of runs in different formats.

We’ll come down here and take a good look at them. But yes, the series is still a long way off, so I can’t say I planned it too much.”

The upcoming five-match Test series between India and Australia will begin on November 22. In this series, India and Australia will play in Perth, Adelaide (pink ball match), Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney from November 22 to January 7, 2025. .

India won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia the last two times it was held there: in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons. Moreover, Australia have not won a series since the 2014–15 season, when they won 2–0 on home soil.

“We’ve had a short break so I’m looking forward to the five-match Test series. Really excited to delve into this. We haven’t had much luck against India in the last Test series, but we always take pride in playing well here in Australia.

The last two episodes were a long time ago, so I think we’ve got it covered. But we have very high hopes for Test cricket in Australia. I think this is the opinion of the fans and the media. So every time we don’t win here, of course you look at those series more closely,” Cummins said.

“The last episode in particular was very difficult. This continued until the last session at the Gabba and unfortunately we were unable to make it happen. A lot of the guys in the team are the same as those who played in that series and we are here to make things right,” he added.

Cummins also reflected on the loss of Cameron Green to BGT after the all-rounder decided to have surgery on a stress fracture in his lower back. “As for Cam Green, he’s a big loss for us. Not just because of his batting, he’s probably the best fielder I’ve ever seen and he’s also a great bowler, which is what we need, so we’ll really miss him.”
