“By all measures, we are in a much worse position than in 2020.”

Fox News host Sean Hannity boldly stated that the situation in the country is now worse than at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

For approximately the entire 2024 presidential campaign, former President Donald Trump and first of all, the president Joe Bidenand then vice president Kamala HarrisRepublicans used the mantra of the party trying to wrest control of the White House from its opposition. In the 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter, challenger Ronald Reagan asked Americans, “Are you better off than you were four years ago?”

Parties seeking to regain control of the White House may ostensibly point to a few crises or statistical indicators to make a strong case that the country is currently in a worsening situation. However, this question is difficult to ask this time due to the realities of 2020, when Trump was president.

In his opening monologue, Hannity told viewers:

So, Kamala’s final message? It’s not a matter of beliefs. It’s not about politics as the last one… It’s not about the track record because it can’t talk about whether this country is in a better position than we were four years ago for a very simple reason. By all measures we are in a much worse position.

The border is not safe. This was the largest national security crisis perhaps in the history of our country, and it was of our own making. The prices of everything you buy in every store you go to have skyrocketed. Crime has increased sharply. And our country and the world have not become a safer place. Are you better than you were four years ago? For most Americans, they will answer—the overwhelming majority—“No.”

Four years ago, much of the country was still in lockdown due to the raging pandemic. Around 1,000 people were dying from Covid every day in October 2020, ahead of a massive daily surge that winter. The unemployment rate last month was 4.1%. Exactly four years ago it was 7.9%. On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at just under 43,000. Four years ago, it closed at just over 28,000.
