Brisbane Broncos’ Ezra Mam is undergoing rehabilitation after a car crash and allegedly failed drug test

Brisbane Broncos’ Ezra Mam is undergoing rehabilitation after a car crash and allegedly failed drug test

Mame’s contract extension ties him to the Broncos until the end of 2029, but Donaghy admitted the five-eighth had “lost his way” amid several other off-field incidents involving Brisbane’s best and brightest.

“We haven’t had a deep internal discussion, but we don’t have the full facts,” Donaghy said when asked whether firing Mam was being considered.

“It would be remiss of me to get too far ahead of myself.

“Obviously there is a process that needs to be gone through with the police and on the issues mentioned, but once all the facts are known and the emotion has been taken out of it, we have to work through that process in a really methodical manner, first with the NRL integrity department, which we communicated straight away.

“Ezra is a young man, he is 21 years old. They make mistakes, but in this industry you have to grow up quickly. This is the price of entry.

“He’s a really decent young man who seems to have lost his way recently, so that could be the pitfalls of the industry.

“In a conversation with Ezra, he apologized for putting the club in this position and, of course, he is concerned about the fate of others involved in this accident.”

New coach Michael Maguire will officially take charge of the Broncos on Wednesday and has been kept up to date on developments surrounding Mam.

Last week’s crash capped a rollercoaster year for the five-eighth, who was described as a “monkey” by Sydney Roosters prop Spencer Leniu during the opening round of the season in Las Vegas.

He and Reece Walsh were also investigated by the NRL’s integrity department last month following an incident in Bali in which a fan complained a phone had been damaged and then replaced during an interaction with two Broncos players.
