Nottinghamshire County Council has urged parents to make sure they understand how school applications are processed and whether their child has a good chance of getting a place at one of their preferred schools before applying.

The easiest way to apply for a place is online at www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/admissions, where parents can also find detailed information about the application process, as well as an admissions guide with useful information and advice.

Those who apply online will receive a confirmation email that their application has been received, and applying online means parents will be able to access their school offer on National Offer Day.

To increase the likelihood that parents will be offered a place they are happy with, the council strongly encourages parents to list four schools and include schools where their children would meet higher entry criteria.

There is no guarantee that a child attending a school nursery will receive a place in Reception at the same school, so parents must apply for a place.

If a child is in the second grade of primary school, there is no automatic transfer to the third grade of junior or primary school.

Sam Smith, Nottinghamshire County Council’s cabinet member for education, special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), said: “Applying for your child’s first school place is an important milestone, so we want parents to have access to all the information. they are needed when submitting your application.

“I would advise parents to research their preferred schools, list four preferences and apply in time to give them the best chance of being offered a school they would be happy for their child to attend.

“Last year, 99% of families who applied for a school place on time received an offer from one of their preferred schools.

“It is also important for families to remember that children do not automatically move from nursery to primary school or from nursery to junior school – they must apply for a place at the school.”

Nottinghamshire parents must apply through Nottinghamshire County Council, even if they want to apply to schools in other local authorities such as Nottingham City or Derbyshire.

Parents who applied online will be able to log into their account on National Offer Day – Wednesday 16 April 2025 – to view the outcome of their application. If parents provide an email address, results will be emailed from 8:30am on the same day.

All other applications will be sent by second class mail on National Offer Day.

Applications received after the closing date are considered late and will be processed once all timely applications have been submitted.
