Royals pitcher Michael Wacha and team agree to new three-year contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals announced Sunday that right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha has agreed to a three-year contract with the club.

The new contract also includes a club option for 2028. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

Wacha, 33, posted a 13-8 record in the 2024 season, his first with the Royals.

He made 29 starts and finished with a 3.35 earned run average, according to a Royals press release.

Wacha allowed three or fewer earned runs in 16 straight starts from May 9 through August. 23.

The effort matches the single-season franchise record set by Bret Saberhagen in 1989, the release said.

Wacha is a native of Iowa City, Iowa.

Before joining the Royals, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.
