The Sydney Marathon will join New York, Tokyo and Berlin following the Abbott World Marathon Majors decision.

The Sydney Marathon has been elevated into the top tier of distance racing alongside Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York in what has been described as a “transformative moment” for Australian athletics.

The event, which ends at the Opera House, was confirmed Monday as the seventh entry into the Abbott World Marathon Majors in New York, capping a three-year program to improve the event.
