Former Kitigan Zibi Anishinābeg chief Dylan Whiteduck stabbed in Maniwaki

Dylan Whiteduck, former chief of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Maniwaki, Quebec, multiple sources told CBC/Radio-Canada.

Quebec provincial police confirmed to Radio-Canada that a man in his 30s was attacked with a sharp object near Cartier Street in the city about 130 kilometers north of downtown Ottawa.

He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said.

Although SQ has not confirmed his identity, several public sources have identified Whiteduck as a victim.

Whiteduck worked as an economic development specialist for Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg before being elected chief in 2020 and re-elected in 2022.

He decided not to run again in 2024, and Jean-Guy Whiteduck (no relation) was elected.

Police told CBC/Radio-Canada two people were arrested and later released at their scheduled court dates. It was unclear as of Sunday afternoon whether bail had been set or whether the two people had been charged.

In Quebec, Director of Crime and Criminal Affairs The DPCP reviews cases and charges people, not the police.

CBC/Radio-Canada has reached out to the DPCP for comment.
