British prosecutors are considering charging Russell Brand with sexual assault

LONDON – British prosecutors say they have received a package of evidence from police about alleged sex crimes committed by comedian Russell Brand and are considering whether to charge him.

Late on Saturday the Crown Prosecution Service said that “the police have referred the file to us to consider a charging decision in this matter. Any decision to bring charges is made independently, based on the evidence and in accordance with our due diligence.”

Brand, 49, was questioned three times by detectives from London’s Metropolitan Police about “recent sexual offences”.

“Our investigation is ongoing and the matter has now been referred to the CPS,” said Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation. “We have a team of dedicated officers providing specialist support to the women who have come forward. We are committed to investigating sexual crimes, no matter how long ago they are alleged to have occurred.”

In September 2023, British media outlets Channel 4 and the Sunday Times published allegations from four women that Brand had been sexually assaulted or raped between 2006 and 2013, at the height of his fame. Accusers have not been identified.

The comedian, author and Take Him to the Greek actor denied the allegations, saying his relationship was “always consensual.”

Known for his wild and risqué performances, Brand has hosted radio and television shows, written a memoir detailing his struggles with drugs and alcohol, appeared in several Hollywood films and was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry between 2010 and 2012.

Brand has largely disappeared from mainstream media in recent years, but has gained a large following online with videos that combine health theories and conspiracy theories.
