Sunderland center helps homeless people adopt dogs

Many hostels that provide accommodation for homeless people do not accept animals, but Swan Lodge started doing so about 12 years ago.

“It all started when someone turned up with a dog called Lucy and I really felt like I couldn’t shoo him away,” Ms Ritchie explained.

“Unfortunately he passed away, but Lucy still lives here with us.”

Swan Lodge works with charities including Street Paws, which provides vet appointments, and Pawz for Thought, which provides bedding, food, collars and bowls.

Staff also allowed residents to adopt rescue dogs.

One called their dog Duke a “savior,” adding: “It’s the company you miss when you’re alone and homeless.

“I suffer from depression and anxiety, but his presence gets me up in the morning.”
