Official Response to Oregon’s Controversial TD vs. Michigan Football

ANN ARBOR, MI — The Oregon Ducks defeated Michigan 38-17 on Saturday afternoon, but it wouldn’t be football if there weren’t some controversial decisions. In the first quarter, on Oregon’s first possession, the Ducks raced down the field and Dillon Gabriel hit Evan Stewart with an over-the-shoulder touchdown—or so we thought.

Oregon quickly attempted the extra point and went up 7-0. CBS then showed a replay of Stewart’s catch. The ball clearly hit the ground. Not only was the call not cancelled, but it wasn’t even sent for replay for a potential call. Sherron Moore did not challenge the decision, and the box umpires did not signal a replay.

After the game, spokesman Frank Snodgrass was asked about the call.

“All scoring plays are reviewed and voided by replay,” Snodgrass said. “That’s why we always put off trying – we’re waiting for the two thumbs up to help with the replay on the field. We got it and left the game and this is what happened. It was removed from the replay for this game.” Otherwise we would not have left the game. Goals scored, losses – all this is automatically checked during replays.”

Snodgrass was then asked whether the call should have been cancelled. He doubled down and said he wasn’t sure and that they had permission to continue with the extra point.

“I don’t know. I don’t watch TV. We received the go-ahead to continue the game. If there’s some TV footage later that might show something different, that’s possible, but I didn’t see it, okay? I’m just telling you that all high scoring plays are reviewed and cleared. We can’t move on until we get clarity and that’s what happened in that game. There could be something that came later. it showed something different. And if that’s the case, then that could be a problem.”

Head coach Sherron Moore wasn’t too happy about it after the game. Michigan plans to talk to the Big Ten about the call and move forward.

“Every touchdown is supposed to be reviewed, so I think that’s something we need to talk about with the Big Ten,” Moore said. “Every landing is supposed to be reviewed, so this definitely should have been called and then reviewed.”
