Imagine a movie where Margot Robbie and Emma McKee share a meta moment about their uncanny resemblance—sounds like a cinematic dream, doesn’t it? The Barbie movie almost went that far, but ultimately decided to stop the doppelgänger joke. That’s why this internal gag didn’t work.

Fans have long noticed the striking resemblance between Robbie and McKee, especially after @morphy_me’s Instagram post went viral in 2019. The post hilariously and seamlessly merged their faces together, causing a frenzy online and leaving everyone wondering: Are these two secret twins?

In a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Robbie talked about the playful banter backstage. “I’ve been told for years that I look like the girl from Sex Education, Emma McKee,” she admitted. It was clear that the joke had potential. Robbie and director Greta Gerwig thought it would be “fun” to mention the doppelgänger drama directly in the script. But when the Barbies dressed up, they quickly realized: “We’re not that similar.” With Robbie rocking her blonde locks and McKee being a brunette, the resemblance was more of a “maybe” than a “definitely.”

So what did they do instead? Robbie took the high road and laughed it off. “When people say, ‘I loved you in Sex Education,’ I just say, ‘Thank you.’ Thank you so much,” she joked. It was all a lot of fun until McKee intervened, adding to the charm of the doppelgänger saga.

In an interview with Total Film, McKee called the comparisons “funny” but couldn’t help but note how talk of doppelgängers affected their Barbie’s chemistry on set. “Margot had the grace and humor to play off of that and let me do a movie with her—God bless her,” she said. “In real life it’s just a joke. I’m like, “We’re nothing alike.” Mackey’s admiration for Robbie was palpable as he added: “Are you kidding me? She’s the best. I look up to her so much. I don’t mind comparisons. But it would be nice to give that up.”

Even though the joke didn’t make it into the final cut, Barbie has taken the world by storm, earning more than $1.38 billion at the box office since its July 21 release. Robbie leads the charge as a stereotypical Barbie who goes on a wild existential journey with her lover Ken, played by the charming Ryan Gosling. The film features a stellar cast including Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae and Simu Liu, painting a picture of vibrant chaos in the pink paradise of Barbie Land.

While the doppelgänger joke faded like a forgotten meme, Robbie and McKee’s playful spirit lingered on screen; Even without the jokes, the film celebrates individuality and the quirky charm of Hollywood’s wildness. Co-written by Gerwig and her partner Noah Baumbach, Barbie showcases humor and depth, proving that even in the world of Barbie, every character has their own unique story.

So while we may never hear that doppelgänger joke in a Barbie movie, the playful connection between Robbie and Mackey lives on. Who knows? The world may finally get that cheeky nod to their similarities in the sequel. In the meantime, we’ll enjoy this colorful ride through the Land of Barbies, doppelgängers and all!
