First Lady Calls on Nigerian Women to Support Women Candidates for Elected Offices

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerian women to rally around, encourage and actively support other women vying for elected office.

She spoke at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Women’s Summit and Dialogue in Abuja on the theme “Empowering APC Women for Leadership and Nation Building.”

Mrs Tinubu, in a statement released on Saturday by her Senior Special Adviser on Media, Busola Kukoyi, said women should avoid creating imaginary restrictions.

She said: “At this stage of nation-building, let us as women leaders remember that we all have what it takes to make an impact in our various spheres of influence.

“Let’s not create imaginary limitations and focus on our potential by persevering, supporting each other and working hard. We can shape the future, let’s do it right, one woman at a time.”

The First Lady called on the female leader of the party to join hands with female leaders from other APC states and address the National Assembly to further push for legislation to increase the quota of women to have seats in the assembly.

She added: “The next election will be for Nigerian women. The Renewed Hope Program of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has a special focus on creating opportunities for women to thrive.

“We have seen an increase in the representation of women in key positions in our party and government. This is proof of the hard work, resilience and determination we have as women and we must continue to move forward in unity.”

Mrs. Tinubu spoke to the women about the principles and qualities of good leadership, especially from women, which include honesty, hard work and compassion.

She noted: “A leader who cannot apologize for his mistake is not worthy of being a leader. When you take office, you must constantly look out for your female colleagues. When one woman succeeds, we all succeed, and when one woman fails, we all fail.”

Earlier, Ogun State Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele commended President Tinubu for consistently demonstrating commitment to gender equality.

The event was attended by the wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, the First Lady of The Gambia, Members of the National Assembly, State First Ladies, Deputy Governors, APC women leaders from across Nigeria and members of the diplomatic community.
