Clean marine energy will be transformed by a new generator system from CGEN Engineering, Tech Xplore reports.

Marine energy technologies – whether driven by wind, waves or tides – all harvest kinetic energy, the energy of motion. To use this to power homes and businesses, the energy must be converted into electricity. This is where new generators come in handy.

According to Tech Xplore, CGEN Engineering has developed a modular and stackable generator system. In other words, one installation can use several generators. This way, if one of them is damaged or needs updating, the others can remain online while workers access that individual device.

🗣️ Will America ever be able to get all of its energy from renewable sources?

By eliminating long downtimes and allowing phased system repairs, the new generator will make marine energy more accessible, reducing costs by approximately 10 to 15%. This could lead to lower energy bills and greater adoption of clean energy technologies.

Generator systems built using this modular technology will also last 30-40% longer than conventional generators and cost 50-70% less to maintain over their lifetime.

As explained by Tech Xplore, the technology was originally created by Professor Markus Muller from the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. Dr Joseph Burchell, a research fellow in the School of Engineering and managing director of CGEN, helped develop it with mechanical and industrial engineer Mike Galbraith. Together, they tested the technology on increasingly larger scales—up to one megawatt, enough for hundreds of homes.

“We believe our technology directly addresses critical gaps in the UK’s offshore renewable energy supply chain,” Burchell said, according to Tech Xplore. “We are committed to working closely with manufacturers and OEMs to scale up production of our technologies, ultimately expanding supply chains in Scotland and the UK to meet the growing needs of the sector.”

CGEN is also collaborating with other companies, including Mocean Energy, which will use modular generator technology in its Blue X wave energy machine.
