National Disability Employment Awareness Month

National Disability Employment Awareness Month

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a time when the nation and the Coast Guard recognize the contributions and accomplishments of workers with disabilities. The Coast Guard supports inclusive employment practices, including ensuring our members have the tools, adequate housing, support and opportunities needed to succeed.

This year’s theme, ‘Access to good jobs for all’, highlights the importance of ensuring disabled workers have access to jobs. Currently, more than 30% of Coast Guard civilian employees have a disability. Their unique talents, adaptability and resourcefulness not only contribute to mission success, but also enrich our collective culture of service. By offering opportunities for career growth and advancement, creating a supportive work environment, and employing inclusive strategies to recruit and retain capable employees with disabilities, the Coast Guard continues to be a model employer of people with disabilities.

NDEAM reminds us of the importance of accessibility and equity in the workplace. This is an opportunity to promote understanding of disability employment and the challenges faced by disabled workers. When we prioritize access, we create a culture of understanding and respect that benefits everyone. As a Service, we are committed to providing access to jobs for all and creating an environment where everyone can realize their full potential.
