The famous Prince of Denmark by Jeremy Clarke March it was led triumphantly by soprano trumpet Josh Rogan and piccolo trumpet by Sophie Spencer.

Three trombonists, Ben Lovell Green, David Bremner and Grant Sinclair, made creative use of the space, performing two ringing Bruckner Aequali from the balcony at the back of the audience.

There was certainly humor in its woozy, slithering flexatones, and perhaps real anger in Stephen Logan’s thundering timpani, but for me the piece’s impact was more musical than political, especially when drawn to the cool serenity of the singing bowls against the soft, muted brass. .

Working across four movements, the Auckland Philharmonic’s resident composer gave us all the color the night promised, from intriguingly inventive brass voices, tinkling vibraphone and glockenspiel and, at one point, the sinister slide of trombones.

Under Vincent Hardaker’s careful direction, the ensemble experienced occasional problems, and I was disappointed when a major eruption was acoustically obstructed. Could it have worked better in the more traditional acoustics of a town hall, where the orchestra’s highlight of the year would have been heard by a larger audience?
