A wildfire on Washington Island sends fire crews rushing from the peninsula

WASHINGTON ISLAND, Wis. (WBAY) – The Door County Fire Chief says a wildfire has burned 10 to 20 acres on Washington Island and crews are still on the scene putting it out.

Egg Harbor/Ephraim Fire Chief Justin McDonald says the fire was initially called at 9:05 a.m. Sunday night at Range Line and Jackson Harbor roads.

The Washington Island Fire Department has activated a MABAS call, which brings additional assistance from nearby fire departments. Fire trucks and crews had to travel to the island by ferry.

At the time of writing, the fire is under control. About 30 firefighters are still on the scene, but the fire isn’t expected to go out for another day or two, MacDonald said.

No buildings were damaged and no one was injured while putting out the fire.
