Melbourne Cup betting: tips, odds and forecast

Here are some betting tips and other useful information to help you bet on the Melbourne Cup with confidence.

Understanding Race

The 2024 Melbourne Cup will be held at Flemington at 3200 metres. Here are some things to know about the historical site and the race:

  • Meet Flemington. Each track is different. This one is dense and left-handed. Look for horses suitable for this type of track.
  • Remember the distance. The Melbourne Cup is held over a distance of 3200 metres. Not many will win this trip. However, look for previous signs of toughness or the right pedigree.
  • Track condition matters. Good or faster ground will do for most, but if the track turns out to be soft or hard, you’ll need a horse proven in those conditions.
  • Handicap. Weight is determined by the handicapper. Look for improving horses that can beat their rating/weight.

Reading the form

Melbourne Cup betting odds are a good starting point for predicting who will win the race. However, it is better to understand the form yourself.

  • Check the ratings. Horses are assigned ratings that may fluctuate. Look for horses that improve over time.
  • Understand endurance requirements. Even if the horse is on the rise, it may not have the stamina to complete the 3200m distance. Proven endurance goes a long way.
  • Check the progress. Again, if the ground gets soft, we want to see a horse that has been proven in those conditions or with a pedigree that suggests he will be suitable.
  • Cross reference shape lines. Find a horse or horses that have been fighting with several others in the field. Keeping the weight in mind, cross-reference the form to see who is the best in that group.

Melbourne Cup odds: Jan Brueghel is late

Not all favorites win, so odds are not the determining factor. However, they are good guides.

Always shop for maximum benefit. It could be in Neds, or it could be somewhere else. Unfortunately there is no offer to sign up with Neds, but there are other products you can use to increase your bet with the bookmaker.

If it seems obvious that your horse is popular and well-endowed, take the early price. If others have good support, yours may deviate, so be prepared to wait for better odds. In other words, keep an eye on the market and stay alert. You may be able to get more value from your bets.

There has been a belated shake-up in the Melbourne Cup betting market after early favorite Jan Brueghel failed veterinary checks and was ruled out of the race by officials. This opened the door to other contenders such as Buckaroo, Onesmoothoperator and Vauban.

According to Neds’ Melbourne Cup odds, Buckaroo is now favorite at 5.00 to win and 2.00 to place. Next in line are Onesmoothoperator and Vauban with odds of 6.00 and 7.00 to win respectively. Here are the full odds for the 2024 Melbourne Cup:

Melbourne Cup Carnival

You can use our Neds codes for more than just the Melbourne Cup itself. This race is part of a great week of racing at Flemington.

It all starts on Saturday 2nd November when we see Victoria Derby Day.. This is the main card, as the feature race is one of the most important events in the country, held over three years.

Melbourne Cup day is Tuesday 5 November.. It’s an unfortunate card, but the $8.5 million Cup is by far the biggest event of the day and week.

Two days later, Thursday, November 7th, is Crown Oaks Day. It’s a slight drop off from the Melbourne Cup, but a great taster before the carnival ends on Saturday 9 November.

Then comes Champions Betting Day, another fantastic day of Group 1 action. You can also use your Neds: Melbourne Cup code to bet on any of these events.
