CPW Reports Above Average Number of Conflicts and Bear Sightings in 2024

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) received 4,644 reports of bears between January 1 and November 1 this year alone, a significant increase over the same period in 2023.

This year’s total is the third highest since 2019, exceeding the six-year average of 4,247 bear-related conflicts and sightings reported to CPW.

There are an estimated 17,000 to 20,000 bears in Colorado, and most reported incidents involve bears attempting to access human food sources each year.

“The number of human-bear conflicts in Mesa and western Garfield County has doubled since 2023. A sharp increase in the number of conflicts is observed in the areas of Parachute, Rifle, Il and New Castle. This was largely due to the lack of natural food sources and the fact that bears were accustomed to roaming residential areas in these communities. Additionally, the number of bears crossing roads has increased this summer, leading to an increase in the number of bears killed by vehicles. There are ongoing efforts with local communities to reduce attractions in and around residential areas,” said Zone 7 Wildlife Manager Kirk Oldham.

To avoid bear conflicts, CPW advises the following:

  • Securing trash cans and containers
  • Removing Bird Feeders
  • Keep your garage door closed even when you’re at home
  • Cleaning and locking car and home doors
  • Call CPW when bears become a nuisance. When you call to report a bear approaching your home, CPW can give you tips tailored to your situation to prevent them in the future.
