Red Bull attacks McLaren for fraud in Brazil

The Formula 1 paddock is once again embroiled in controversy as Red Bull accuses McLaren of using underhanded tactics at the weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix. The allegations suggest that McLaren filled its tires with water to improve cooling, according to Auto Motor und Sport. The accusation comes amid an already tense 2024 season, with both teams often at odds over rules and regulations.

At the center of Red Bull’s allegations is an allegation that McLaren adds water to the tire valves, a method believed to keep the tires at an ideal temperature, thereby providing a significant advantage on track.

Earlier this season, Red Bull accused McLaren of using a flexible rear wing, an allegation that eventually forced McLaren to abandon the design after an investigation. In response, McLaren pointed the finger at Red Bull, saying changes had been made to the underbody height of Red Bull cars. An FIA investigation into these allegations found Red Bull’s designs to be legitimate, but required changes to the McLaren modifications.

Tire management in Formula 1 is a highly regulated area, closely monitored by Pirelli, the sport’s exclusive tire supplier. Since technicians are present at every event, it will be difficult for any unauthorized modifications to be made undetected. After each race, a thorough tire analysis is carried out, which easily identifies any foreign substances such as water. However, while the FIA is investigating the current claims, Pirelli’s findings have not yet revealed any discrepancies.

Historically, Formula 1 teams have been known to test the limits of technical regulations in the pursuit of performance, often resulting in a constant game of cat and mouse with the FIA.

These developing controversies are particularly significant given the fierce competition in the constructors’ and drivers’ championships this season. McLaren, driven by a resurgence led by driver Lando Norris and his talented teammate Oscar Piastri, are vying for the top with Red Bull, who remain the team to beat with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez leading their campaign. As such, any potential findings or sanctions resulting from these investigations could have a significant impact on the results of the championship.
