Timescale brings advanced artificial intelligence to PostgreSQL

PostgreSQL database platform company Timescale has expanded its PostgreSQL artificial intelligence toolkit with the release of pgai vectorizer.

It is open source (cloud-hosted) software that promises to allow developers to create advanced artificial intelligence applications without the need for external tools or specialized knowledge.

PostgreSQL is used as a popular database 49% developers worldwide according to StackOverflow.

Timescale says it is committed to providing the PostgreSQL community with cutting-edge technology without the need for specialized tools or knowledge. The company did this by extending PostgreSQL for real-time analytics. Timescale is now bringing artificial intelligence to PostgreSQL using the pgai package and running the pgai Vectorizer.

Manage multiple tools

Developers are under increasing pressure to create artificial intelligence systems such as search engines, augmented generation (RAG) search engines, and artificial intelligence agents. However, this often involves managing complex workflows using multiple tools: built-in creation, data processing, and real-time synchronization.

New specialized tools emerge daily, increasing infrastructure overhead and requiring new knowledge, but few have the operational maturity or agility required for production.

Pgai Vectorizer integrates the entire embedding process into PostgreSQL, allowing developers to create, store, and manage vector embeddings alongside relational data without external tools or additional infrastructure.

Together with the complete pgai package, it integrates the entire AI workflow into PostgreSQL, simplifying complex workflows into a single system. This allows developers to build modern AI applications with fewer resources using familiar SQL commands.

“(I feel like) pgai Vectorizer is a game changer. It promises to streamline our entire AI workflow, from onboarding creation to real-time synchronization, allowing us to deliver AI applications faster and more efficiently,” said Web Begol, CTO of MarketReader. “By integrating everything directly into PostgreSQL, pgai Vectorizer eliminates the need for external tools and expertise, allowing our team to focus on innovation rather than infrastructure.”

Thousands of developers are already using the pgai AI toolkit, and with pgai Vectorizer they now have even greater opportunities to streamline their workflows and speed up their AI development.

Unified AI and Data Platform

Key differentiating capabilities of pgai Vectorizer include a unified AI and data platform for managing all data for AI applications (vectors, metadata, event data) while handling the implementation process on the same robust PostgreSQL database platform without the need for external systems.

Real-time synchronization automatically synchronizes vector embeddings with the latest data changes, avoiding outdated data and conflicting sources of truth. Also here we find version tracking and compatibility to track model versions and ensure backward compatibility during deployment for a smooth transition.

While specialized vector databases or embedded systems require complex setup and specialized knowledge, pgai Vectorizer provides capabilities that are said to go beyond vector search and are built entirely on PostgreSQL.

“By building AI into PostgreSQL, pgai Vectorizer allows any developer to build breakthrough AI applications faster while significantly reducing infrastructure costs,” said Ajay Kulkarni, CEO of Timescale. “We’re proud to have taken PostgreSQL from a robust database to the full-fledged AI development platform the teams have been waiting for.”

By combining the simplicity developers rely on with the advanced AI capabilities they need, pgai Vectorizer can redefine what’s possible in PostgreSQL.
