What time does summer time end? When is this? When we “retreat” this weekend

It will all be over soon.

No, not Election Day, which takes place later this week. But Daylight Saving Time is a time change that occurs twice a year that affects millions of Americans.

At 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, clocks in most, but not all, states will “go back” an hour, giving people an extra hour of sleep and more daylight in the morning.

Time adjustments affect the daily lives of hundreds of millions of Americans, causing clocks to change, contributing to less sleep in the following days and, of course, earlier sunsets.

Here’s what you need to know about the end of Daylight Saving Time.

Halloween and Daylight Saving Time: How the holiday changed time (sort of)

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Daylight Saving Time is the time from March to November when most Americans set their clocks forward one hour.

We gain an hour in November (instead of losing an hour in the spring) to provide more daylight on winter mornings. As we “move forward” into March, we want to add more daylight in the evenings. In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumn equinox falls on Sunday, September 22, and marks the beginning of the fall season.

When does Daylight Saving Time end in 2024?

Daylight Saving Time will end this year on Sunday, November 3, when we “step back” and get an extra hour of sleep.

Next year it will start again on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

What time exactly does daylight saving time end?

The clocks will “go back” an hour at 2am local time on Sunday, November 3rd.

When did Daylight Saving Time start in 2024?

Daylight Saving Time began in 2024 on Sunday, March 10th at 2am local time when our clocks moved forward an hour as part of the annual time change.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Not all US states and territories adopt daylight saving time.

Hawaii and most of Arizona do not observe daylight saving time. Due to the desert climate, Arizona does not use daylight saving time (except for the Navajo Nation). After most of the United States passed the Uniform Time Act, the state concluded that there was no compelling reason to adjust clocks to make sunset an hour later during the hottest months of the year.

There are also five other US territories that do not participate:

  • American Samoa

  • Guam

  • Northern Mariana Islands

  • Puerto Rico

  • US Virgin Islands

The Navajo Nation, located in parts of Arizona, Utah and New Mexico, observes daylight saving time.

Hawaii is another state that does not observe daylight saving time. Due to its proximity to the equator, there is little difference in daylight hours throughout the year.

Is Daylight Saving Time Ending?

The initiative to end the clock change came before Congress in the last couple of years when the US Senate unanimously approved the Sunshine Protection Act of 2022, a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent.

Although the Sunshine Protection Act passed the Senate unanimously in 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives did not pass it and President Joe Biden did not sign it.

The 2023 version of the law also remains dormant in Congress.

In a press release Monday, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio took another step in his support for permanent daylight saving time.

The senator challenged the nation to “stop tolerating the ridiculous and outdated practice of setting our clocks forward and back. Let’s finally pass my Sunshine Protection Act and end forever the need to “step back” and “jump forward.”
