A once-beloved empty shopping center in the Birmingham area could soon become home to a medical center

After years of renovations, the once-beloved Brookwood Village shopping center may be getting some updates.

The Homewood Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Nov. 5 to consider converting part of the vacant property into a medical office building.

If the redevelopment is approved, the former Belk Mall site will become the 135,000-square-foot Andrews Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, according to city documents.

Andrews Sports Medicine, based on the St. Vincent Hospital campus in Birmingham, aims to create one of the largest ambulatory surgical centers in the Southeast if it is approved to move to Brookwood Village, according to a proposal submitted to the city of Homewood.

In the proposal, the company wrote that it hopes the center will be a catalyst for job creation and continued economic growth in the metro.

“With the right vision and thoughtful planning, Brookwood can be restored to its rightful place in our community,” the proposal states.
