‘Game-changing’ duvet sleep expert says UK ‘needs to embrace’

Almost one in five Britons toss and turn at night, and bedroom temperature is often to blame for disrupted sleep. To combat this, experts offer a variety of solutions, from avoiding caffeine before bed to the unusual tip of keeping socks in the refrigerator on hot evenings.

But another trick is gaining traction, common overseas but relatively unheard of on British shores: separate duvets for you and your partner. Sleep specialist James Wilson, also known as “The Sleepy Fan,” is a strong proponent of this approach to achieving sleep bliss.

He recommends: “If you have a partner, sleep with two blankets instead of one. Typically in Nordic countries like Denmark or Norway, couples have two blankets, so each person has their own when sleeping.”

“This person says we have a duvet, and this could end up in a ‘duvet war’ where one person says, ‘I have a duvet, I’d like another duvet,’ or, ‘No, we have this (like ) duvet and you get into this kind of battle. With separate duvets, they not only provide a better temperature for sleeping, but also save you from fighting over the duvet.

TikTok user Cecilia Blomdahl, from Svalbard in Norway, shared her “perfect” tip for a good night’s sleep, which involves leaving blankets and sheets on for a few hours. Her latest video on the topic has been viewed more than 3.8 million times.

In an earlier video, she explained that the first rule for fresh sheets is to “always air out your blankets as often as possible. If possible, then at least once a week, and it’s especially good if it happens outside in cold weather. They’re so fresh and airy and amazing.”
