Resident turns home into shelter for families who can stay ‘as long as they need’

An aspiring business owner has turned his property into a haven for families who need a place to stay.

Marcus Mackay was renovating his home to turn it into tourist accommodation near Valencia, but suspended work to instead give his rooms to families in need when the floods occurred.

Living in the mountains, he was practically unaffected by the flood and initially tried to help on the ground, but was unable to get into the affected cities.

Talking about Peace with Yalda HakimHe said he offered his place to Facebook after seeing destruction he “couldn’t even put into words” – and was stunned by the response.

“I had an amazing response from people who needed help,” said Mr Makai, who said he had 10 bedrooms and a separate apartment.

The family of five, including three children, have already moved and can stay “as long as necessary.”

Animals are also welcome in his enclosure, with 30 dogs arriving this weekend.

“I don’t sleep, I don’t eat, I’m just trying to organize people and help them,” he added.

“And yes, to be honest, it was very difficult. It was really very difficult.”
