WhatsApp Lists are designed to bring order to the Wild West that is your inbox.

WhatsApp Lists are designed to bring order to the Wild West that is your inbox.

  • The recently leaked WhatsApp lists feature started rolling out officially today.

  • Lists appear at the top of WhatsApp’s home page in the filter bar, making it easy to find important conversations.

  • Users can create up to 20 lists and they are completely private.

Recently, there has been a trend among WhatsApp’s new (and upcoming) features that are largely borrowed from Instagram. For the record, the messaging giant was recently spotted working on providing music support for status updates, and private mentions and likes in status updates have already started rolling out to users and will soon be available globally.

Elsewhere, and more importantly, WhatsApp will finally get personalized emoji reaction lists similar to what its sister platform Instagram already offers. This change means that when reacting to a message, users will first see the 7 most frequently used emojis, followed by the other most popular emojis they use from time to time.

Now, finally, in a change not borrowed from Instagram, WhatsApp is officially rolling out the previously leaked lists feature.

The new feature, as the name suggests, allows you to organize chats in customizable lists. Think of it as a feature that allows you to isolate important contacts from the bulk based on certain categories and criteria. You can name your list whatever you like: “Family”, “Colleagues”, “Close Friends”, etc., and add as many contacts to it as you like. They will appear in the Filters section of WhatsApp, which currently hosts All, Unread, Favorites, And Groups.

Lists are a welcome addition, especially for power users who mainly use WhatsApp for everyday, work or school conversations. Offering an easy way to find specific chats right at the top of the app’s home page, lists eliminate the need to scroll aimlessly to get to the conversation you want.

Your listings are completely confidential

If this feature is available to you (not available to us yet), you will see a plus icon next to the default chat filters on the WhatsApp home page, as shown in the image above. Clicking the plus icon will take you to New list Creator, where you can give it a name and add people or groups to it.

Users will be able to edit the created list, including changing its name and adding/removing contacts, by simply pressing and holding it in the filter panel. In total, users will be able to create up to 20 lists, and their position in the filter panel can be adjusted depending on their priority. It’s also worth noting that the lists are completely private, meaning your contacts won’t be notified if you add them to the list, such as “annoying relatives”, “people who send chain messages” and “people who always write in caps” “

WhatsApp suggests that the lists began rolling out to users today “and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.”
