Apple acquires popular photo editing app developer Pixelmator

Apple has agreed to acquire Pixelmator, a Lithuanian developer of popular photo editing applications subject to regulatory approval. acquisition will bring the creator Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOSand Photomator under the corporate umbrella of Apple.
Pixelmator assured users that there would be “no significant changes” to existing apps in the near future. Company package image editing tools were available exclusively on Apple platforms, including macOSiOS, iPadOS and VisionOS.
The acquisition comes as Apple intensifies its focus on AI-powered image processing features following the recent introduction of iOS’s Cleanup feature, which competes with Google’s Magic Eraser. Pixelmator recently expanded its applications with AI and machine learning capabilities to customize photos and create masks.
Founded in 2007 in Vilnius, Lithuania, Pixelmator has built a reputation as a cost-effective alternative Adobeproducts that offer powerful image editing tools for a one-time purchase rather than a subscription model. The company’s Pro version is currently available for $49.99.
The completion of the deal remains uncertain amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of technology acquisitions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Apple’s software acquisition history has been varied, with some applications, such as Dark Sky, being integrated into Apple’s own applications, while others, such as Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, have maintained their independent status.
The Pixelmator team expressed enthusiasm for the merger, saying they “can’t wait to tell our users what’s coming next.”
