Algona tears Harlan apart, 49-6 | News, Sports, Vacancies

ALGONA — The Algona football team showed they are still a Class 3A threat even without star quarterback Alex Manske.

Nathan Manske, a sophomore on the Iowa State University team, scored two touchdowns in the first half as the Bulldogs upset one of the most storied programs in the state, Harlan, to take a 49-6 lead.

With the win, Algona (9-1 overall) will now face Mount Vernon next Friday for a spot in the semifinals and at the UNI-Dome.

Manske threw for nearly 200 yards and two scores for University of Iowa baseball’s Tate Slagle in the first half as the Bulldogs built a commanding 35-0 lead.

Slagle had five receptions for over 100 yards and two scores before halftime, while future Cyclone Jack Limbaugh ran for two short touchdowns. Limbaugh caught Manske’s touchdown in the third.

Evan Alley scored in the first half for Algona, which was eliminated from the postseason in the first round last year.

The Bulldogs’ defense held Harlan (6-4) to under 100 yards of total offense in the first half, and the Cyclones only put points on the board after trailing 42-0.

Mount Vernon (9-1) advanced with a 42-0 win over Carroll.
