There was no snow on Mount Fuji in Japan for a long time

For a long time there was no snow on Mount Fuji in Japan.

There was still no snow on the country’s tallest mountain on Halloween. This is the longest period on record, The Weather Channel reports.

According to The Guardian, the volcano’s snow cap begins to form on October 2 on average. Last year, snow was first discovered here on October 5th.

Japan experienced above-average temperatures in September and October, according to The Weather Channel.

This year the country experienced its hottest summer on record, with temperatures 1.76C (3.1F) above average from June to August, BBC News reported.

“Temperatures continued to be warmer than expected in September as the more northerly position of the subtropical jet stream allowed warmer southerly air flow over Japan,” BBC News reported. “The heat eased a little in October, but it was still warmer than the average month.”

Yutaka Katsuta, a forecaster at the Kofu local meteorological bureau, said comparative data became available in 1894, and this year broke the previous record of Oct. 26, which was recorded twice, in 1955 and 2016, according to The Guardian.

He said climate change may have some impact on delaying the formation of the snow cap.

Fewer climbers have scaled Mount Fuji this year after Japanese authorities introduced entry fees and a daily limit on the number of climbers to combat overtourism, according to The Guardian.

Mount Fuji last erupted about 300 years ago and has been immortalized in countless works of art, including Hokusai’s The Great Wave, The Guardian reports.
