Election 2024: How can I track official election results in key states on November 5?

We’re quickly approaching Election Day 2024, and while news outlets will certainly be providing full coverage of every event, you can reduce the noise by going straight to the source and getting results from official sites in key states.

Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, and this year it is headlined by the race for the presidency between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. As with the previous election cycle, experts are predicting a tight race that will come down to the results of several key battleground states. Turnout is also expected to be high this year, with more than 66 million people voting early in the U.S. so far, and states like Georgia already reporting record numbers.

Read on to find out where you can find official Election Day news, learn how to find out what’s on your ballot this year and find out if your state allows early voting.

What are the key battlefield states in 2024?

Because of the way the Electoral College system works, it has often happened in recent decades that presidential elections end up being decided by a handful of “battleground states,” also known as “swing states.” These are states whose populations are more evenly split between Democratic and Republican voters than most other states, raising the possibility that they could swing one way or the other during a presidential election and decide the outcome.

Seven states are considered key battlegrounds this year: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. These are the states whose results are likely to attract the most attention on Election Day.

Where can I get official voting results in key battleground states?

For each of these states, you will be able to get Election Day results online from the official state government website, usually the Secretary of State’s website, but also possibly the State Board of Elections website. Below is where you can check the results for each battlefield state:

When will we know the winner of the 2024 presidential election?

Don’t expect to know the final results when the first polls on the East Coast begin closing at 6 p.m. ET. In 2020, voting precautions and measures taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the close nature of the race overall, were cited as reasons why the results of the presidential race were not known until the Saturday after Election Day. called.

This year, voters are again being cautioned not to expect a firm result by the end of Election Day, Nov. 5, largely due to the seemingly close nature of the race. The closer the election in a given state, the longer it takes to count enough ballots to reach a final result. While we likely won’t wait until then for results, states must certify their election results by December 11th.
