Hurricane Milton damaged at least 723 properties in Brevard County.

At least 723 properties in Brevard County were damaged by Hurricane Milton, county officials said.

Of these, 32 had what was classified as “severe” damage, indicating significant structural impacts; and 109 had “minor” structural damage.

Among the 32 properties that sustained major damage, 10 were in the Cocoa Beach area, where a tornado linked to Milton struck before the storm passed through the county.

A further 405 properties suffered damage classified as ‘casualty’, meaning a carport was damaged, for example.

And 177 properties were classified as “none,” which means impacts to property other than structures — such as fences, trees or downed power lines.

Rachel Horst, public information officer for Brevard County, said the damage assessment was compiled with the help of county staff and Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel who drove through the county looking for damage, as well as residents who reported damage to the county.

The analysis was classified by zip code rather than by city, town, or unincorporated area; and it is not a monetary estimate of the total damage from the hurricane.

The postcodes with the highest number of properties listed were 32904 in the West Melbourne, Melbourne Village and West Melbourne area (98 listings); 32,953 in the Merritt Island area (63 properties); 32976 in Barefoot Bay and Micco (61 listings); and 32780 in the Titusville area and 32931 in the Cocoa Beach area (43 listings each).

Horst said compiling damage reports helps counties qualify for FEMA assistance, which Brevard County was actually eligible for.

So far in Brevard County, FEMA individual and family assistance has been approved for more than 650 households, totaling approximately $2 million, which includes housing assistance and assistance with other needs.

FEMA’s Individual and Household Program provides financial and direct services to eligible individuals and families affected by disasters who have uninsured or underinsured essential expenses and serious needs. Assistance is not a substitute for insurance and cannot cover all losses. The assistance is intended to meet basic needs and complement disaster recovery efforts.

Program assistance for individuals and households may include money for:

  • Temporary housing, such as rental assistance or hotel reimbursement.

  • Renovating owner-occupied homes that serve as the family’s primary residence.

  • Other uninsured or underinsured expenses and serious needs caused by the disaster.

Brevard residents can apply for federal disaster assistance for damage caused by Hurricane Milton. To be eligible for federal assistance under FEMA’s Personal Assistance Program, hurricane damage and losses must have resulted from Hurricane Milton, which made landfall in the Bradenton area and exited through Brevard County on October 10th.

People with insurance must first file a claim with their insurance company. If they do not have insurance or insurance does not cover their claim, they can apply for FEMA assistance.

Those who have suffered damage related to Milton can register with FEMA using one of the following methods:

  • Online at DisasterAssistance.gov.

  • On the FEMA mobile app.

  • Call 800-621-3362 (FEMA). The toll-free number is open from 7:00 to 23:00, seven days a week.
