Demanding answers after questionable arrests by Metro Sgt.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) — The Metro sergeant in charge of a unit on the Strip is now facing charges for a series of questionable arrests under his command.

Last week, FOX5 showed you the evidence presented to the grand jury that led to a number of charges being filed against him. This week we heard from the Nevada chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

While they praised the internal affairs process that led to the arrest of Sergeant Kevin Menon, who spent a decade on the streets of Las Vegas, they continue to have questions about his unit and how the investigation will proceed.

“This is disgusting and shameful. No one wants to see tax dollars spent this way, but beyond that, no one thinks this is how the police department should be run,” said Athar Hasibullah, executive director of the ACLU of Nevada.

In one of the videos presented to the grand jury, Menon can be seen shoulder-checking a man on a pedestrian bridge over the Strip. Two uniformed metro officers chase the man and detain him.

“We all saw what happened in that video. They make videos that emotionally incite specific people to fight so that they can be stopped,” Hasibullah explained.

Hasibullah says the ACLU is actively trying to learn more about how often this happened. The grand jury video highlights several different incidents.

“Who knows how many people have gone to jail… This is just a reminder that you cannot blindly believe what any government agency says,” Hasibullah said.

It was a fellow officer who came forward to report the offence, and Hasibullah credits Metro for not covering up Menon’s actions.

“I’m glad they took action after this issue was raised and went through the internal affairs process,” Hasibullah shared.

Menon did not carry out illegal stops and searches alone. The ACLU issued a public records request seeking more information.

“Metro should release a report publicly telling how many arrests he was involved in, not just where he was the arresting officer, how many arrests he was involved in, how many incidents he was involved in, who else was involved in this.” …make it transparent,” Hasibullah demanded.

FOX5 reached out to both Metro and the DA’s office this week. We asked if any other officers were facing any disciplinary action, charges or were under investigation? Are all of Menon’s cases from his decade-long career being reviewed?

Metro sent a one-line response: “The investigation is ongoing.”

The Clark County District Attorney did not respond to our request.

Last week, Menon’s home was raided and he was arrested again, this time on two counts of possession of child pornography. Menon posted bail.
