Woman collects 22 bin bags during Stroud Half Marathon

The councilman averaged 100 pieces of trash per mile during the half marathon.

Stroud District Councilor Jill Thomas said She usually completes the half marathon in under two hours, but it took her twice as long to pick up trash along the way.

She used 22 bags to get rid of items including a wig, dirty diaper and underwear.

“The Stroud half went surprisingly well but it was extremely hard work,” Ms Thomas said. “It was much harder than running a regular half marathon.”

Each year the Council spends £770,000 on rubbish collection, street sweeping, bin emptying and rubbish collection.

Littering is classed as anti-social behavior and can result in a fine for those who commit it.

“Littering is anti-social and bad for the environment – there is no excuse for it,” Ms Thomas said. “The municipality has more than 1,400 waste bins and empties them regularly. Anyone who finds a bin full can report it on the council’s website.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout the course, as well as our council staff who work hard to keep our area clean.”
