A major fire at a plant in the Auckland suburb of Otahuhu has been contained.

Firefighters were called to the building on McGee Street around 3.20pm on Friday and found it on fire.

Fifteen trucks and two support vehicles battled the blaze at its peak and are still on the scene extinguishing hot spots.

Area residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use any designated diversions to allow emergency services access to the scene.

Rail services between Middlemore and Otahuhu have been suspended due to a fire which occurred very close to the railway tracks. Passengers should check with Auckland Transport for service status.
