Best Warrior Build in Dragon Age: The Veilguard – Companions, Abilities, Weapons and More

The Warrior is a class in Dragon Age: The Veilguard that offers a wide variety of ways to play with many viable approaches. In the simplest sense, players can switch between sword and shield or two-handed weapons, with the latter dealing more damage but significantly slower. Some two-handed weapon builds also allow you to deal high damage to quickly eliminate enemies with takedowns.

In our recommended approach, we typically stick to sword and shield to take advantage of some incredibly powerful abilities in the Warrior’s arsenal. The class’s inherent survivability should mean that you won’t need to actively mitigate incoming damage and can instead focus on maximizing performance.

While this class is clearly focused on melee combat, the core of our build is centered around throwing a shield to deal a lot of damage to both single targets and groups. Along with this, maximizing your critical strike chance and reducing enemy resistance will allow you to squeeze out every ounce of damage.

Mage and Rogue can use their superior movement to avoid enemy damage in The Veilguard. Conversely, the Warrior’s best bet is a well-timed parry, with the benefit of a larger attack window against normal-sized enemies.

Best Specialization

• Best Specialization: Reaper

Warriors have three specializations available to them, which are unlocked at level 20 (the same as Mage and Rogue). The Reaper’s spec tree leans even further into the shield-throw approach to combat, adding a good mix of leech and general buffs to the equation.

Slayer is heavily focused on two-handed weapon play, prioritizing massive one-hit damage over everything else. The final option is the Champion tree, which borrows from the Gray Wardens’ fantasy of wielding the shield again while also supporting the group as a whole.

We recommend going with the Reaper spec, as it’s probably the most powerful damage option of the three at the moment. Necrotic damage also ends up being quite impressive compared to burning or freezing enemies, so that can be taken advantage of as well.

Best skills and abilities

• Necrotic abilities: Reaper, Phantom Hold and Blood Assault

Our general gameplay loop as a Reaper Warrior revolves around bouncing shield throws that deal massive damage. The Shield Barrage trait in the main Warrior tree makes this possible, and can often deal up to 7000 damage, depending on enemy resistance and critical hits.

Necrotic Damage’s enormous mastery allows it to play a central role for us Warriors, and all three of our active rotation abilities deal this type of damage. The first of these abilities is Reaper, which requires a spectral scythe to arc through enemies in an arc in front of the player.

Next up is Spectral Bulwark, which puts a barrier between the enemy and our Warrior. The third choice for most players should be Bloody Advance, which throws a fan of blades that seeks out enemies, an ability that works best when facing groups of enemies.

Dexerto/Biovar

Besides being great abilities on their own, they synergize very well when used in conjunction with each other or with our Shield Throw. Taking the Unyielding Focus trait gives us the Immobility trait when using Spectral Bulwark. This prevents enemies from interrupting the charging of our Shield Throw and makes fights much safer.

Bloody Assault casts Shatter and impales enemies with crystals that explode when the enemy is subsequently hit by Shield Throw. Reaper blasts weakened enemies and casts Siphon, which effectively steals life for the player.

Our choice for Ultimate is Spirit Storm, and it also acts as a life steal, becoming more powerful as more enemies enter its area of ​​effect.

While all of these impressive explosive abilities are a lot of fun to play with, the shield throw is where this build is at its core. In many cases, you will be able to deal higher DPS by simply using your attacks instead of wasting time using abilities.

Better stats and gear

There’s a ton of different gear to pick up in Dragon Age, and the right choice depends on its rarity, which directly determines how powerful it is. For our Warrior build, the main stat to consider will be the extra necrotic damage.

A good example of this would be the legendary Dark Shard longsword, which works great in tandem with the Necropolis Defender’s shield. Both directly increase necrotic damage, with the former also applying the Necrosis status effect to enemies on a critical hit.

As a Warrior, any direct physical damage buff will also work very well, and you’ll quickly see noticeable improvements to outgoing damage. Lastly, Stagger is a really powerful tool that you can rely on for quick hits and high damage executions.

In terms of armor, the Hall of Valor is a great source of gear if you have the required level 4 reputation to trade high level gear with a merchant. They sell unique Extravagant Plate armor, which significantly increases the effectiveness of abilities and protection, instantly turning the Warrior into an unkillable monster.

The Shrinking Rune also works very well, weakening all enemies around the player. This leaves them open to further blasts from the Reaper or using one of our companions to achieve the same effect, as described in the next section.

Best companions

The Warrior is so self-sufficient that you can afford to use all the resources of your companions to deal the maximum possible damage. Thus, your best bet is to look for those who interact well with the player as well as each other for maximum effect.

As such, Niv is our favorite choice to complement this Captain America-style shield-throwing build. Not only can she detonate the Shatter that we deal with Bloody Offensive, but she can also apply Weaken, allowing us to then detonate that status with Reaper.

Taash is a great foil for Neve as she gives us another way to blast her weakened enemies, which is especially useful when you’re running low on Rage.
