A week before the election, former first lady Michelle Obama headlined a star-studded event for her nonpartisan civic organization When We All Vote in Atlanta.

Obama did not give the same speech as he did when he met with Vice President Kamala Harris in Michigan on Saturday. Instead of focusing on reproductive rights, she warned about the dangers of being an apathetic voter.

“In this country, change takes decades, not days. So it can be frustrating. So it’s natural to wonder if anyone can hear you, if anyone can see you. It’s healthy to push your leaders to be better, even to question the entire system,” Obama told the audience.

Obama called on these voters to take the same interest in this election as the most “influential” people in the world.

“I sat at the table with some of the most powerful people in the world. And let me tell you, many of these people sitting at these tables have no idea what your life is like,” Obama said. “They don’t care about your apathy. Moreover, they welcome it. They welcome it. They are happy that they are in complete control of this game. That is why every person with real power in this world is fully involved in the political process.”

She told the crowd they couldn’t “afford” to be apathetic.

“So you have a choice. You can listen to them. You can fold your arms and stay home. Or you can listen to me. And if you want to listen to me, here’s a warning. There are only a handful of very rich people in the world who can truly afford to be indifferent to our politics.”

She continued: “You don’t have the luxury of being indifferent to who is in power and who makes the rules. As for young people, over the years you will all have to put things in order. Good, because I’m not going to stay here forever. And I don’t want, I don’t want you, all our young people, to look one day and realize that you don’t even recognize the world you live in.”

Obama pushed the audience to ensure that the government actually “cares” about these voters.

“How are you going to make sure that those in power really care about you? And we get help without sitting out? It’s not just sitting back. Or is it you? When you use the tools, you have to make sure that those in power actually see you.”
