A cold weather rule will go into effect that will prevent utilities from suspending service during the winter months.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) – The cold weather rule will help Kansans who may fall behind on their utility bills during the winter.

According to the press release, utility companies cannot cut off customer service for 48 hours if temperatures drop below 35 degrees.

The rule also requires utility companies to offer a 12-month payment plan. This will allow customers to maintain or even restore service.

Customers with past due balances will also be eligible to participate in this payment agreement. However, customers will be responsible for notifying companies of their needs.

There are certain conditions required for maintenance or restoration of services. Customers will be required to agree to pay 1/12 of the total amount owed, 1/12 of the current bill, the full amount of the disconnection or reconnection fee, and any applicable deposit to the utility.

The cold weather rule for Kansas and Missouri is in effect from Friday, November 1st through Monday, March 31st. For more information about the Kansas Cold Weather Rule, visit their website.
