Unusual CCTV footage shows a series of car crashes at Britain’s “most dangerous intersection”, with thirteen crashes in two months.

Several cars overturned and one crashed into a huge lorry at a junction on the A521 in Cheadle, Staffordshire.

Fortunately, no one was killed, but local residents believe that if nothing is done, it is only a matter of time.

They blame misleading yield signs and faded road markings for a staggering number of crashes that have caused hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage.

Footage of the doorbell ringing from councilor Gary Bentley’s nearby home captured the dramatic scenes. Gary said he has counted 13 strikes since August.

One of the videos shows how the car failed to notice the yield markings and drove over the markings before being hit by a truck.

Another video shows an SUV cutting off a VW Golf and then rolling across the road onto the pavement.

The latest accident happened on Thursday (October 17) when a car and a van collided at an intersection.

Residents are now pushing the council to make changes to the junction to prevent future accidents and possibly deaths.

Conor Bernard Devine, owner of the nearby Huntsman pub, is counting the number of days between each strike, which currently stands at four.

The 55-year-old said: “You hear a big explosion, you run out and there’s a car on the roof again.

“It’s a matter of time before someone gets killed there.”

“We are currently on a four-day streak. We’ve been here for 15 years and there’s always been trouble due to accidents.

“For some reason it’s getting worse. I don’t know if these are road markings or not.

“Three of them were very serious and then a couple of minor wing violations.

“An Aldi supermarket is also being built which will increase footfall in the town.”

Gary, an independent councilor for High Peak City Council, called for traffic lights to be installed.

He said: “This is a busy intersection. We think this could be the deadliest thing to happen in Britain – it has been for the past few weeks.

“We were all concerned about the problems on the highway and people coming from the city, most accidents are caused by people outside the area.

“A car pulled up a couple of weeks ago and he didn’t know he needed to stop. There were two of them. One was hit by a car, the other by a truck. We chalk this up to weak lines.

“The council drew one line. But last week’s accident was on the other side, where they didn’t paint. They only painted one side of the road. Who does this?

“One side is beautifully drawn, the other is not visible. I wanted the signs to change from yield to stop, that’s the minimum I needed.

“Ideally we need a traffic light. We had another intersection where a person died, but 18 months ago there was a traffic light there. That’s what I’m aiming for.

“We have had £170,000 worth of cars broken into in just six weeks. This happens all the time. We not only have big disasters, but also small disasters.”

Gary says he worries about his 84-year-old father Alan, who lives nearby and often walks along the road.

He added: “This has been going on for many years but it seems to have gotten worse this year. I can only attribute this to road maintenance and potholes.

“There were no white lines at the end. There is a raffle sign hanging high above.

“This is my corner, I love my corner. We all get along, we all help each other. The only thing that lets us down is the intersection.”

Dad Alan, who has lived in the area for 60 years, said: “It’s not safe. I would like a big roundabout, a huge roundabout to slow them down, or traffic lights.”

Mark Deville, cabinet member for strategic highways at Staffordshire County Council, said the crashes were being investigated.

He said: “Once we have all the information, we will see if any action is required on the ground.”

“Keeping our roads safe remains our priority and we listen to residents and work with local communities if they have concerns about road safety in their area.”
