Before we get our hands on Starbucks’ holiday menu, the coffee giant is making non-dairy milk alternatives available for free.

A Starbucks drink made with soy, oat, almond or coconut milk will no longer cost you extra money.

Starting next week, Starbucks customers will no longer pay more to add non-dairy milk to their orders. The company said the removal of the non-dairy milk surcharge means customers who request it will pay about 10% less than before.

Starbucks has seen an increase in orders for milk alternatives in recent years, along with non-dairy alternatives in grocery stores. In 2021, Starbucks added oat milk to its menu. Non-dairy milk was the second most common order modification at Starbucks, behind the addition of a shot of espresso.

It’s one of several changes Starbucks has made under new CEO Brian Niccol, who took over the struggling company in September.

Starbucks on Wednesday reported a decline in sales and customer visits for the third straight quarter.

Starbucks’ global sales at stores open at least a year fell 7% last quarter, and customer transactions fell 8%.

“Our financial results were very disappointing,” Niccol said during the company’s quarterly earnings call. “It is clear that we need to fundamentally change our strategy to win back customers and return to growth.”

Bringing back condiment stations and sharpies

Under Niccol’s leadership, Starbucks is moving forward quickly.

Starbucks is cutting promotions through its mobile app to get customers to pay full price for coffee and tea. Niccol aims to position Starbucks as a premium brand that eschews discounting.

Despite the reduction in discounts, Niccol said the company has no plans to raise prices next year. Starbucks has raised prices in recent years, causing some customers to turn away from the chain.

Starbucks also said this week it was removing controversial olive oil-infused drinks from its menu, less than a year after launching them.

The Oleato line of drinks will be removed from Starbucks menus in the U.S. and Canada starting in early November, part of Niccol’s plans to trim a menu he recently called “too complicated.”

And Starbucks plans to bring self-service locations back into stores, Niccol said Wednesday. The company removed them at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

“Both of our customers are asking for it, and our baristas say it will help them” get orders filled faster, he said.

Baristas, who will write customer names on drink orders with a marker, will also return, part of Niccol’s strategy to recreate the conglomerate’s coffee shop atmosphere and add a “human touch.”

Shares of Starbucks (SBUX) were little changed in regular trading but were up 0.5% in after-hours trading.
