Hardest Geezer will be interviewed by RW in Worthing this Friday

Russ Cook will be in Worthing on Friday 1 November to discuss how and why he decided to run across Africa. The race, covering 10,000 miles and 16 countries, took Cook 352 days. He turned this adventure into a book, The Hardest Oddball: Mind Over Mileswhich is now out, and we will be talking about it in the Worthing Assembly Hall tomorrow evening. Will ask questions RW‘s senior editor Rick Pearson.

This is the first time Cook will share his remarkable story with a live audience, and it is his only live performance in the Southeast this year.

From his starting point at Cape Agulhas in South Africa to his finish in Tunisia on April 7, 2024, Cook experienced everything the great continent had to offer. From sandstorms in the Sahara Desert to rainforests in the Republic of Congo and even across mountain ranges. He has run the equivalent of 386 marathons in a row and raised more than £1 million for charity.

Despite serious obstacles, including attempted kidnappings, armed robbery and being denied entry into Algeria, Cook never once considered giving up. Thanks to his determination and ability to overcome extreme odds, he has amassed a huge following of well-wishers online and has been interviewed numerous times on prime-time television.

Cook’s decision to take on Africa may have been his most challenging physical challenge to date, but it came after years of personal struggles with serious gambling and alcohol addictions. For years, he hid the reality of his struggle until he achieved the personal triumph that comes with completing endurance tests. Through his experiences and trials, he learned that struggle cannot be avoided: it must simply be lived through.

Russ Cook will be speaking at Worthing Assembly Hall this Friday 1 November 2024.
