Police clash with ‘hostile’ fans in Los Angeles after Dodgers win World Series

Baseball fans gathered in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the Dodgers’ World Series victory threw projectiles and fireworks at officers who tried to disperse them, police said.

A “hostile” crowd that gathered near 9th and Flower streets was declared an unlawful assembly late Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department said on social media.

“Leave the area immediately and follow all orders from officers,” the department said on social media.

When police ordered the crowd to disperse, the crowd began moving east toward 8th Street, police said.

“Various projectiles are being thrown at LAPD officers in the Olympic Stadium area. & Grand,” the department added. “Additional resources are being allocated to provide assistance in this area. If you are on the street, at or near this intersection, leave the area immediately. and follow the orders of the officers.”

Police said they also received reports of robberies nearby.

Mayor Karen Bass earlier warned that “violence will not be tolerated” as the city celebrated its victory over the New York Yankees.

“The LAPD is currently on tactical alert and has activated a strategic plan to protect communities and businesses,” she said, “which includes proactive deployment and a coordinated strategy with regional partners to ensure that all Los Angeles residents “Angeles will be able to celebrate safely.”
