Kamala Harris gathers tens of thousands of people in DC to remind them of January 6th.

In what her campaign called a “closing argument,” former President Kamala Harris took to the Ellipse in Washington, D.C., Tuesday night to remind voters of exactly what could happen if former President Donald Trump returns to authorities.

Standing roughly where the 45th president stood on Jan. 6, 2021, as he led an unruly mob of supporters to the U.S. Capitol where Congress was certifying his defeat in the 2020 election, Harris said voters face a decision that will directly affect them. their families, “and this country we love.”

“This may be the most important vote you ever cast,” she said.

Voters can choose a country built for all citizens or a country “ruled by chaos and division.”

“The choices and stakes in this election,” Harris said, became clear on Jan. 6.

“We know who Donald Trump is. This is a man who stood in this very spot almost four years ago and sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol to overturn the will of the people in a free and fair election, an election he knew he would lose,” she said.

Trump was told, Harris said, that the mob wanted to kill Vice President Mike Pence. Trump allegedly responded, “So what?”

“That’s who Donald Trump is,” Harris said.

“He has a list of enemies that he intends to bring to justice,” she said. Trump has said he will pardon people accused of participating in the Jan. 6 riot, Harris said. According to her, he will turn the American army against the American people.

“This is not a presidential candidate who is thinking about how to make his life better. This is a man who is unstable, obsessed with revenge, consumed by resentment and seeking uncontrollable power,” she said.

Trump’s national press secretary, Caroline Leavitt, said in a statement that Harris’ “closing argument” was filled with “lies, name-calling and clinging to the past to avoid facing the truth.”

“The migrant crime crisis, sky-high inflation and raging world wars are the result of her terrible policies. Kamala’s first day as president was over 1,300 days ago, and she’s spent the last four years working hand in hand with Joe Biden to destroy our country – but now she’s lying about her record because she doesn’t have any policy decisions. that she could offer. . As for President Trump, his final argument to the American people is simple: Kamala broke him; he’ll fix it,” Leavitt said.

For her part, Harris promised to express unity.

“For too long we have been consumed by too much division, chaos and mutual mistrust – it can be easy to forget the simple truth: it doesn’t have to be this way,” Harris said.

Harris said that if elected, she will “always listen to you.”

“Even if you don’t vote for me,” she said.

Responding to attacks from her critics, including the Trump campaign, Harris said her presidency would not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s, but a reflection of her own values.

Trump, she said, would cut taxes by $2 trillion on the very wealthy, but would impose a “Trump sales tax” in the form of tariffs that would cost American households thousands of dollars every year. It would repeal the Affordable Care Act and exclude millions of patients with pre-existing conditions from health plans.

“We won’t go back,” she said.

Harris said she would impose a federal ban on food price gouging, cap prices for insulin and other prescription drugs for all patients and work to help families afford housing.

“I will fight to help first-time homebuyers make down payments, fight rent-gouging companies, and build millions of new homes,” she said.

Harris also highlighted the fight against abortion, noting that Trump said he was proud to be behind the Supreme Court, which overturned Roe v. Wadeand that one in three women now lives under “Trump’s abortion ban.” Harris said she would work with Congress to turn Roe into law.

“It would ban abortion nationwide, restrict access to contraception, jeopardize access to IVF and force states to monitor women’s pregnancies,” she said. Trump has said he does not support a national ban on abortion but will leave the issue up to the states.

On immigration, Harris said, politicians need to stop using it as an election issue and treat it like “the serious issue that it is.” She will sign the “border bill that Donald Trump killed.”

Harris also promised to build up the military, while her rival, according to her, considers veterans and military personnel “suckers and losers.” Trump has denied making such comments, although his former chief of staff, retired General John Kelly, confirmed Trump’s remarks.

“I will always honor and never diminish the service and sacrifice of our soldiers and their families,” Harris said.

Harris’ speech lasted about 30 minutes and drew a huge crowd to Washington, with an overflow crowd streaming under the Washington Monument on the National Mall.

Ahead of Harris’ speech, Trump addressed reporters at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Tuesday morning to accuse Harris of ending with a message that did not address the everyday concerns of Americans and their kitchen table. concern.
