University of Akron and Cleveland Clinic will continue to collaborate on emergency medicine program

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) – The University of Akron and Cleveland Clinic Akron General have renewed a partnership that allows students to double-enroll in emergency medicine programs, providing a fast track to a career in healthcare. With this affiliation, students will have the opportunity to earn 30 academic credits while completing certificate programs in both emergency medical services and paramedic training.

This partnership between the two has been in existence for nearly 40 years and is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified emergency medical technicians in Ohio and beyond. As the healthcare industry faces a growing need for first responders, this initiative offers students a unique opportunity to receive hands-on training and academic credits, preparing them to enter the job market as qualified professionals.

“This collaboration is truly unique,” said Dr. John Wiencek, UA executive vice president and provost. “By working together, we are providing students with an unprecedented opportunity to earn important EMS certifications while advancing their education. This program is a great example of how innovative collaborations between educational and healthcare institutions can create a stronger workforce and positively impact society.”

Students enrolled in the program can earn EMT and Paramedic certificates through a streamlined curriculum that also leads to 30 credits toward a degree in the UA College of Health and Human Sciences. This dual enrollment option allows students to jumpstart their careers, armed with the knowledge and experience needed to succeed in the demanding field of emergency medicine.

“Cleveland Clinic Akron General has a long tradition of educating future generations of acute care caregivers,” said Titus Shears, MD, chief of medical education and research at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. “Our ongoing partnership with the University of Akron makes an impact on students and the health care needs of our community. We expect 60 emergency medicine and 60 medical students to graduate this year alone, and we are proud that this important educational work will continue.”

“We are proud to partner with Cleveland Clinic Akron General on this initiative,” said Dr. Stacy Willett, director of the UA School of Disaster and Emergency Services. “Together, we are creating a program that not only supports students’ educational and career goals, but also addresses a critical need in our health care system. These emergency medical technicians are encouraged to continue their education in one of the school’s many associate and bachelor’s degree programs. This is an important step forward in strengthening emergency medical services in Ohio and beyond.”
