The sharing of power between coalition partners should arise from coercion rather than demand for polls: Tol. Thirumavalavan

The sharing of power between coalition partners should arise from coercion rather than demand for polls: Tol. Thirumavalavan

Meanwhile, VCK founder Tol. Thirumavalavan said in Tiruvannamalai that the idea of power-sharing among coalition partners should only arise out of compulsion due to the prevailing political situation and not as a requirement for joint participation in elections.

Addressing the media after a meeting with party functionaries, the Chidambaram MP said that during the Emergency, the opposition parties came together in 1977 to remove former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi from office and agreed to share power if they formed the government at the Centre. “No such situation has arisen in Tamil Nadu. No party in the state will seek to weaken itself by sharing power with coalition partners…,” he said.

He also said Mr. Vijay’s power-sharing idea may not be genuine as it was announced too early – 18 months before the Assembly elections. “Now is not the right time to introduce such an idea. This proposal did not cause any unrest on the DMK-led front…,” he added.

He also criticized Mr. Vijay for not speaking out against the BJP and the Sangh Parivar. “He was more focused on attacking the DMK and the Dravidian model of governance and dynasty politics instead of fighting communalism and fascism promoted by the saffron party and the Sangh Parivar… His stand on protecting minorities is unclear. He also ridicules those who oppose fascism…”
