I rewatched La La Land and most of Emma Stone’s plot doesn’t make sense.

There’s no doubt that La La Land was one of best films of 2016. Not only was it adorable to see Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling falling in love on screen for the third time, but we also had catchy songs and impressive choreography, and it was a real love letter classic hollywood musicals. However, when I rewatch it, there is one peculiarity. 89th film nominated for an Academy Award It doesn’t make sense to me and it has to do with Emma Stone’s character Mia becoming an actress.

Mia lacks a clear path to professional acting

On end La La Land, The casting director at Mia’s one-woman show wants an aspiring actress to audition. While we have no idea if this audition led to her becoming a professional actress, it still doesn’t give us a clear picture of Mia’s career breakthrough.

Throughout the film, we see the struggles that many aspiring actresses go through as Mia faces rejection at several auditions. We don’t see her moving forward through small roles or maybe extras. It looks like she doesn’t even have an agent or manager to help her get the plots. Assuming it was her audition after performing on a one-woman show that led her to going pro, it would seem like an overnight success story rather than middle-stage grit and grit. La La Land just fast forward to five years later, leaving us with no idea how she achieved success.

Mia is obviously only capable of playing herself.

Among Mia’s unsuccessful auditions is a Los Angeles resident playing a police officer, teacher and doctor. This is a hopeful artist portraying someone she is not in real life. The ability to demonstrate versatility and range are great qualities to demonstrate as an actress. However, we haven’t seen Mia successfully play anyone other than herself. After all, if we take her seriously as an actress, shouldn’t she have shown us at some point La La Land that she could triumphantly play someone very different from herself?

It’s safe to assume that Mia’s one-woman show, “Goodbye Boulder City,” was a semi-autobiographical story. Her boyfriend Sebastian describes it as “the whole world from your bedroom” and her love for Paris is shown against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower. But if one interprets that Mia’s audition for a Parisian film led to her professional acting debut, she apparently achieved the role by portraying herself. Through amazing La La Land song to listen toMia tells her story about her aunt and the importance of being an artist. But we still don’t know if she can play people other than herself or if she can only play herself.

Did Mia study acting at all?

Whether Mia went to acting school remains unclear. We know she dropped out of college after two years, but we have no idea if she majored in theater. Mia also told Sebastian that her inspiration for acting came after her aunt introduced her to many classic films. However, did she ever go to acting school? Did she ever try to get into art schools like Juilliard or Tisch School of the Arts to study greats like Chekhov or Stanislavski? I’m guessing that after Mia moved to Hollywood after dropping out of college, she went straight to auditions rather than studying anything about the craft.

If Mia was really serious about becoming an actress, she should have tried to study theater in college or take workshops to perfect the craft. After all, studying with great teachers or reading good books about acting is a great way to improve your chances of getting an audition rather than just trying to get it done. But, La La Land It seems like Mia felt that auditioning for a great script read was all she needed to get her foot in the door.

Mia’s lavish celebrity lifestyle shows off more than just her talent

At the beginning La La Land When Mia works as a barista, she serves a famous actress whom she admires. At the end of the musical film, Mia turns out to be a famous actress, surprising the barista who serves her. It would have been nice if the film could instead end with a scenario out of character for Mia, only for the camera to reveal that she is on set filming a scene. At least this ending will allow viewers to see Mia’s talent shine in front of the camera.

Instead we see Mia’s big house and her face on posters. Bye La La Landthe ending can be interpreted as happy With Mia achieving her dream, all the audience sees is the luxurious lifestyle of a successful actress compared to how her craft is brought to life. This makes it seem like the glamorous consequences of an acting career are more important than the opportunity to make a living showing off your talents to the world.

Mia traveled for acting, but couldn’t handle Sebastian’s tour

Mia’s boyfriend, Sebastian, decides to join his former bandmate’s jazz fusion band to provide a steady income. This involves him having to travel and be away from Mia for a while. When Mia leaves Sebastian a message that she misses him, she seems very sad that her boyfriend has been away from her for so long. Then, when Sebastian surprises Mia with a home-cooked dinner, she becomes upset that Sebastian is going away on tour for “a long time.”

While it’s entirely reasonable for Mia to feel bad about Sebastian having to be away for most of the year on tour, wouldn’t Mia have to do the same thing as an actress? She will also have to be away from Sebastian for filming and press tours. If Mia had actually auditioned in Paris, she would have had to spend a lot of time in another country for filming. It would seem hypocritical that Mia can’t handle something when Sebastian leaves, she would put him through the same thing while being away for months if the roles were reversed. If Mia couldn’t handle Sebastian while he was away, I can’t imagine she could handle touring for her own ambitions.

Mia would be better off as a writer or producer

When Mia talks to Sebastian about her desire to act since childhood, she mentions that she writes her own plays and performs them in her bedroom. So from a young age, Mia was a writer. Having grown up in Hollywood, Mia is also capable of putting on a one-woman show, something not every aspiring actress can do. Despite her play did not receive a large audience (which may have been due to Mia not telling BCC the big names she included in her email list), it did catch the attention of one casting director. During Mia’s big audition, she was told to simply tell the story of her life, since the upcoming film does not have a script and is written by the actors. If we assume that Mia got the role after this, it was due to her ability to create a story while being herself.

Indeed, there are many actresses who have achieved great success in writing their own projects, such as Unreliable creator and star Issa Raemusical series Rachel Bloom Crazy ex-girlfriend Comedy by Nia Vardalos My big Greek wedding and much more. But there are other actresses, such as Zendaya, Jennifer Lawrence and Florence Pugh, who have begun playing characters different from them, which has shown their range and allowed their talents to flourish. It would be great if La La Land showed Mia walking the same route. Otherwise, a famous actress should become a writer or producer if she is better at writing stories than playing a role other than herself.

La La Land It may have been a wonderful love letter to classic Hollywood musicals, but Mia’s plot about her eventually becoming an actress doesn’t make sense to me. I think the musical film was meant to encourage young people to realize that they should become a writer or producer rather than an actress. After all, the entertainment industry seemed to love her more when she created stories herself rather than playing different roles.
