10-story hotel collapses in Argentina, killing one, trapping several people

The collapse of a hotel in Villa Gesell, Argentina, resulted in one confirmed death and many people were believed to be trapped under the rubble.

The 10-story Dubrovnik Hotel reportedly collapsed early Tuesday morning. It is believed that up to 15 people were staying at the hotel, which was undergoing renovations, at the time of the incident.

Rescue teams are currently on the scene trying to free those who may be trapped. Local reports said an elderly man in his 80s was killed in the collapse.

Municipal authorities ordered a halt to construction work in August because renovations were being carried out without the necessary permits. Despite this, neighbors reported that work continued despite the suspension order.

Argentine National Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced on X that two specialized rescue teams, including civil engineers, rescue specialists and a canine unit trained in dealing with collapsed buildings, had been dispatched to the scene in Buenos Aires province. The teams have specialized equipment and resources to assist in rescue efforts.

Javier Alonso, the province’s security minister, told local radio that four masons working at the construction site survived the collapse and were subsequently detained by police.
